Tropical Storm Wilma forms in Caribbean

The last name in the list of Atlantic hurricanes for 2005 is Wilma, and she formed on Monday in the Caribbean.

It is rare for me to meet anyone with the same name. It's even more rare to have a storm with the same name. This is exciting.

Last week, news stories started explaining that since 2005 has been a busy year for hurricanes, the 21 names used to name the storms would soon be exhausted, ending with Wilma. Names thereafter would come from the Greek alphabet, starting with Alpha. Before the storm formed emails started arriving in my inbox last week with subject lines such as...

"Oh man, this is sure to be a category 5!"

"Whoa, watch out for this one!"

and

"We're in trouble now!"

Come on! Am I really so bad?

I tried to think about which of my traits are similar to a hurricane.

Strength. I have that. From categories 1 to 5, I'm at least a 4.

I don't back down easily. (Did I mention that I'm also a Taurus?)

And don't get me started on a rant. I gain momentum along the way.

But really, I don't know. Can I play innocent, and say I don't know what my friends are referring to?

Track the storm here.

Wilma, Do you think if storms were named for Disney characters they might be more understood and a little less frightening? I would certainly prefer not associating a classic name like Wilma with a killer storm - at least not at the onset. Hurricane Pooh sounds ok though?

boyastronomer: Too many people already "Pooh Pooh'd" hurricane warnings before this year. Let's not show a softer side now.

Wilma - As a meteorologist, I'd like to remind you that hurricanes stay centered, know how to put the right spin on things, and like to spend time at the beach. They have an inner calm, outer strength, and they look good in photos. That sounds like you.

Are hurricanes part of global warming? You might enjoy this:

Boyastronomer, An interesting thought, but Hurricane Pooh just reminds me of the mess left in New Orleans, and Hurricane Goofy seems like...

Well,...

Thanks for the comment and the compliment Anonymous. Your comment really made me smile.

BTW, I totally believe the intense hurricanes in the past few years are a result of global warming. Thanks for the link to climatemash.org.

Thanks for the Pooh comment-ary -W, and sir anonymous. Hey, I just thought through the Greek alphabet. 'Pi' will probably be pronounced by some unfortunate newscaster as 'Pee'. That seems to be what these wicked storms are doing to these cities. I probably should keep these comments confined to my home over a glass of wine in an empty room. My wife would see little humor in any of them - and thats ok. I find it hard to covey a permanent smile thru text. R
